A healthy family is a happy family! That’s why at the YMCA of Oakville, we offer a number of safe and active fitness programs for the whole family to get fit together.

Jiu-Jitsu

The meaning of the term Jiu-Jitsu is as follows “Jiu” or “Ju” means flexibility, pliable, or adaptable to any combat situation. “Jitsu” simply means art.  Basic Jiu-Jitsu techniques involve the following: striking, parrying, blocking, throwing, joint-locking, neck restraints, and the use of small weapons.  Jiu-Jitsu teaches maximum efficiency in the use of physical and mental energy. It is also an art because it is a method in which one can achieve self-realization and increased mental alertness.  It is a science because of the involvement with the laws of physical forces, momentum, velocity, gravity, and leverage.

Jiu-Jitsu is many things to many individuals. It is self defence, and a recreational activity for both young and old who wish to practise the art for personal enjoyment and security.  If one wishes to become involved in the art known as Jiu-Jitsu it will benefit in numerous ways: Increased Focus, Street Defence, Flexibility, Physical Fitness, Self Confidence, Self-Discipline, Pure enjoyment.

All black belt instructors from the CHIMO-RYU JIU-JITSU CLUB are certified by the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu council.

Dan Poirier, Chief Instructor 8th Degree Black Belt – A separate Canadian Jiu-Jitsu membership fee applies. It is paid once a year to the Chief Instructor.

Schedule:

  • Tuesday and Thursday Evenings (Adult Classes) – 7:00pm-9:00pm
  • Saturday (Youth Classes):
    • Age 6-8 years – 9:00am-10:00am
    • 9-12 years – 10:15am-11:45am
    • 13-17 years – 12:00-1:30pm

Fees: Youth is $15.00, Adult over the age of 16 is $35.00, and Black Belts are $50.00. (Cash Only)

Taekwondo 

Oakville Taekwondo Club has been a YMCA of Oakville program since 2000.

The Taekwondo recreational program is designed specifically for youth ages 7 years and up as well as adults. The focus is to instill confidence, self-discipline and self-esteem through the teaching of Taekwondo by providing a positive, fun and friendly environment.

Youth classes resume September 7.

Schedule:

  • Wednesdays
    • Ages 7+ (Beginner and Yellow stripe): 6:00-6:45 pm
    • Ages 7+ (Yellow belt and Orange belt): 6:45-7:30 pm
    • All ages (Green belt to Red belt): 7:30-8:15 pm
    • All ages (Black stripe and Black belt): 8:15-9:30 pm

Oakville Taekwondo Club is led by Master Tino and Master Jamie Dossantos.

Fee: Taekwondo is a members-only program. All participants must be a current member of the YMCA of Oakville. An additional fee of $15 applies.
