Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why did the YMCA convert the old Rock-Climbing Gym into the Family Play Center?2023-10-30T14:07:29-04:00

The Adventure Center was unused during many hours of the day for its intended purpose (Rock-Climbing). Rock Climbing is not a fully accessible activity, and it requires skilled, certified staff supervision at all times, further limiting member access. Our New Family Play Centre , made possible by a generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, will be  accessible to families with drop-in access and lots of opportunities to play together in a safe, fun and interactive environment.

Why can’t my younger children attend with my older children?2023-10-30T14:08:46-04:00

The spaces inside the structure are small and the manufacturing specifications for the structure caution owners to group children playing together so they are similar in size and motor ability. This is safer for the children who may collide or interact in tight interior spaces. We are following these manufacturer guidelines and grouping children 5 years of age up to 10 or a maximum height of 48 inches for drop- in times. This way children will be safer playing together. We are also offering times each day for groups of younger children to play together in the structure.

Can I leave my child when I go to work out?2023-10-30T14:09:20-04:00

No. During parented time, you must remain inside the Family Play Centre to supervise your child.  There are specific times when we are offering sign-in options for parents, when YMCA staff will supervise your child when you sign them in with a designated staff person. Please refer to the program schedule for the times when we offer sign- in programming.

Can I leave my child if I (parent) must use the washroom?2023-10-30T14:09:59-04:00

No, you should take your child with you if you need to leave the room for any reason.

Are food and drinks permitted in this space?2023-10-30T14:24:24-04:00

Food or drinks are permitted only in the front viewing area while seated. This area is identifiable because there are no mats on the floors in the viewing area. No food or drinks are permitted inside the structure nor on any of the matted play space surfaces.  This is for safety. A hot coffee and a running child or a bouncing ball are not compatible.  Also, food debris can makes its way into the crevices of the mats which becomes extremely difficult to keep clean and sanitary. Please keep food and drinks away from the active play spaces, mats and structure.  (Please ensure that you clean up after yourself and your child).

Can I go in with my child (is there an age limit)?2023-10-30T14:24:56-04:00

If your child requires assistance you are permitted to go in with them, you may also need to enter the structure if your child is unable to exit independently. Please be mindful of children playing and running through the areas to avoid collisions.

If there are eight children in the Play Structure at a time, and more children are waiting how long can they play?2023-10-30T15:18:38-04:00

We ask that you use the whiteboard and rotate children every 15 minutes. There are other activities for children to do below the structure while they wait for their turn. This is an honor system, and we ask you to consider our shared experience to share use of the structure responsible.

Will there be birthday parties in the Play Center?2023-10-30T15:19:25-04:00

Yes, this is a great space for parties, you can host your entire group in one space for 2 hours, including playtime, food, cake and presents. Please contact our party staff for more information.

What if my child does not have socks or appropriate attire?2023-10-30T15:20:03-04:00

We will have some spare socks, tracksuit pants and T-shirts available for use. Please understand we will be strict about no bare feet, zippers, grommets and no hoodies or strings for safety. (please ensure any borrowed items go into the dirty bin).

What do I do (parent) if there is rough play that makes me or my child uncomfortable?2023-10-30T15:20:38-04:00

As with any parent supervised playground experience, we ask that you discuss this with the parent of the other child. Our goal is that during parented times, parents and children work together to ensure the shared experience is positive for all. If a concern continues, please speak with a member of our team.
