My Journey with the YMCA: A Story of Growth, Support, and Belonging
by Solomiia
Four years ago, I arrived in Canada full of hopes, but also full of questions. I left behind my home, my country Ukraine, and everything that was familiar. Starting over wasn’t easy, but I was determined to find my place and grow. One of the most important things that helped me feel like I belong here was finding the Oakville YMCA.
Back in Ukraine, I worked in a childcare, taking care of young children. When I arrived, language was a big barrier. I didn’t speak English fluently and I was afraid I couldn’t communicate. But at the YMCA, I was welcomed with patience and kindness. They made me feel safe, like a child who is also learning something new. It was a place where I could grow without fear.
I was lucky to meet Gillian, who believed in me and inspired me to take a big step—starting to study Early Childhood Education. Her support gave me the courage to believe in myself. During my practicum, she taught me how to make confident decisions and keep going even when things got hard. Her trust in me changed my life.
My team leader, Lindsey, has also made a big difference in my journey. She always listens carefully, values our ideas, and creates a warm and respectful environment. Watching her lead with kindness and strength inspires me to be not just a good educator, but a strong and compassionate one.
Every day, I learn something new from my co-worker Makala. She is wise, kind, and deeply dedicated to the children. Her love for the work and her clear and gentle way of guiding the classroom motivate me to keep improving. I am very thankful to have her as a mentor and colleague.
At the YMCA, we follow a child-focused approach, understanding each child’s needs and supporting them the best we can. This experience has helped me appreciate Canada’s cultural diversity and better understand the families we work with.
The YMCA has become my home. It gave me purpose, confidence, and a real sense of community. In less than a year, I’ve grown more than I did in the past four. In other places, I felt out of place, but at the Y, it was different. From the beginning, the community, the organization, and the children welcomed me with love, even without knowing me. They helped me adapt and gave me a space to grow. Today, I feel like a better person and part of the Canadian community.
Thanks to the YMCA and the amazing people I’ve met, I am proud to grow as an educator and as a human being. Now I know I belong, and I am in the right place.
