Show a Young Person The Impact of a Career in Aquatics

At the Oakville YMCA, we see first-hand the impact of a career in aquatics can have on a young person. For many becoming a lifeguard or a swim instructor is a natural extension of an activity they enjoy and a great first job experience. Right now, Canada wide there is a shortage of lifeguards and swim instructors, a situation intensified by the recent pandemic. One of the reasons young people tell us they are not pursuing a career in aquatics is the prohibitive cost of the required certifications and courses. So, we have created the YMCA of Oakville Fill the Chair Campaign to generate the funds necessary to provide these courses and certifications to deserving young people at no cost. This Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Scholarship Program will be available to youth aged 15-19 who demonstrate financial need.

It’s not just about teaching them how to swim or how to guard a pool, but about equipping them with a skill set that can open doors to meaningful employment and transformed lives, providing young people with purpose, responsibility, and a stable means of income.

That is why we are on a mission to raise $50,000 in 2023 for our Fill The Chair Campaign. A gift of $500 that all deserving young people can have the opportunity to train and thrive.

By helping with Fill the Chair, you’re giving a young person a chance to learn and work. We want all young people to have this chance. Your support makes a big difference.
