A New Beginning: The Story of Denis and His Family

When Denis and his family arrived in Canada, they didn’t know what to expect. Coming from Ukraine and fleeing the war, they sought a place where they could feel safe and accepted. Canada represented a chance to start over and hope for a better future for their children.

They first settled in Calgary, where they joined the YMCA. “It was more than just a sports center; it was a place where our family could grow and adapt,” recalls Denis, His children enjoyed sports and recreational activities, while his wife made connections in fitness classes.

The need for better job opportunities resulted a move to Oakville. Denis secured a Production Manager position at a local company. Starting over in a new city required once again finding housing, securing their children’s education, and, most importantly, finding ways to feel t part of the community.

Denis learned about the YMCA of Oakville’s Newcomer Connect Program, funded by Halton Region and TD Bank, which offered six months of free membership to their family. “For us, the YMCA wasn’t just a gym; it was a place where our children could grow and where we all felt welcomed,” Denis shares. They enrolled their children in soccer, basketball, swimming, and Jiu-Jitsu, where they learned discipline, and sports skills and made new friends.

Adapting to a new country came with many challenges, but thanks to the YMCA, the Chitipakhovyan felt they weren’t alone in the process. “The YMCA offered us financial support so our kids could attend sports and recreational activities. The Y has been a place for them to focus on healthy living and build friendships, critical for their settlement. For Denis and his family, the YMCA is a refuge, offering a place to belong. “I come to the Y and find a safe place to meet people, talk, and forget about the routine. We’ve even made friends. Sometimes, it’s necessary to have someone to talk to, and the Y has provided that for me,” Denis says.

Today, Denis and his family look back and feel proud of what they have accomplished. “When we arrived, we only had a couple of suitcases and many dreams. Now, we have a home, a community, and a future in Canada.”

Denis wants to share a message with other newcomers: “Starting over is difficult, but there are people and organizations like the YMCA ready to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for support. Sometimes, a small gesture of help can change your life. Thanks to the YMCA, our family has not only found stability but also a place to grow and thrive.”
