Importance of Understanding and Acceptance
Gabriela’s early years were marked by significant changes. At the age of 2 and a half, she began attending part-time child care as her father was going to school. However, she got diagnosed with autism a month before her 3rd birthday, prompting a shift to full-time at the YMCA located within St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School. After her diagnosis, Gabriela’s parents felt that full-time child care was necessary for her development.
Despite these challenges, Gabriela thrived thanks to dedicated teachers who provided inclusive supports to ensure programs and approaches met her needs. As Gabriela transitioned to YMCA Before and After School Care, she continued to receive personalized support, bolstering her sense of belonging.
Her positive experiences at the YMCA inspired her dream of becoming a teacher, realizing the importance of understanding and acceptance. Participating in various YMCA programs throughout her adolescence, Gabriela grew her confidence and leadership skills.
Through the Leaders in Training program, Gabriela discovered her passion for helping others, leading her to choose the YMCA as her project during an Edu-Travel program. She witnessed firsthand the Y’s impact on communities, reinforcing her commitment to giving back. Fast forward seven years, Gabriela is now employed with the YMCA, and says she knows her work as a YMCA staff member is significantly influencing children and youth in our programs.
Grateful for the opportunities and sense of community the YMCA provided, Gabriela continues to thrive and excel, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree as she aspires to teach primary and junior grades. Gabriela’s story captures how the YMCA can have a pivotal role in personal growth, despite childhood challenges to realizing the full potential becoming a confident and compassionate adult ready and willing to make a difference in the lives of others.
