As you know last week, the Premier confirmed the placement of all  municipalities in Ontario within the Provincial COVID-19 Framework Zones. Peel and Toronto were placed into Lockdown effective Monday, November 23. Halton remains in the Red or Control Zone.

In the Red or Control Zone we must limit the number of members who attend the YMCA to small groups of 10.

We are finding that this means that  current members are not always able to access or book the programs they wish resulting in waitlists . In an effort to improve our ability to meet current Oakville member needs and reflect the safety measures in place we are implementing the following:

  • We will suspend the sale of any new memberships to the YMCA of Oakville for a period of 28 days. Public Health officials are urging people to remain in their community and Zone and we are finding an influx of people interested in joining the YMCA of Oakville from areas that are currently in Lockdown. We will review this decision on December 22, based on the status of the provincial landscape at that time.
  • We ask all members to book their visit in advance, and if for any reason cannot attend, to please cancel the booking as far in advance as possible so that someone from the waitlist is able to attend
  • We ask members to limit their visit to a maximum of 60 minutes
  • We strongly recommend that all members wear their mask while at the YMCA, and this includes while exercising. While this recommendation is not mandatory at this time, we are observing that other fitness providers and other YMCAs have put this measure into place to mitigate airborne transmission, and we see it as a reasonable preventative measure to consider.
  • We are assessing our ability to expand operating hours to better meet the needs of members who wish to attend

Welcome back to the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA! 

Although Phase 3 Reopening for Ontario came into effect for the region of Halton on Friday, July 24, we made the decision to delay reopening our facilities for members to ensure a safe and responsible reopening.

We are now excited to share that we are now OPEN!

Just a reminder that Oakville is in the “Red” zone in Ontario based on Provincial Guidelines:

  • Members must pre-book all visits and workouts in mywellness; remember to complete a wellness check no more than two hours before you arrive for your workout at the Y
  • In an effort to serve as many members as possible within the current restrictions, we kindly ask members to limit the duration of their visit to one hour
  • Members can book workouts for a maximum of one hour on the Wellness Floor
  • Limit of 10 people per area
  • Physical Distancing of 3 metres throughout the facility

Now available: Indoor Fitness Classes, Youth Programming, Family Activities

It has been wonderful to see our members and staff back at the Y. Today, we are excited to share more updates on our programming.

  • December 24 (Christmas Eve): 7:00 am – 2:00 pm
  • December 25-26 (Christmas and Boxing Day): CLOSED
  • December 31 (New Year’s Eve): 7:00 am – 2:00 pm
  • January 1 (New Year’s Day): CLOSED
  • January 2: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

As of November 9, we are happy to announce that we can offer indoor fitness classes once again at our Peter Gilgan Family YMCA.

Provincial Requirements recommend new safety protocols that include social distancing of 3 metres and a 10-person limit for indoor fitness classes. We will continue to run our virtual classes and our Zoom sessions for GentleFit, Yoga, Parkinsons, and Healthy Hearts. Please book your preferred time through the mywellness app and have an eye on our website for the most updated schedules.

November 16 onward, we are planning to offer some youth programming to our members who aged 8 years and up. These include: CycleFit, Bootcamp, Yoga, and Creative Movement. All of these classes will be on a registered basis; please e-mail Customer Service. The updated youth programming schedule can be found here.

We are also offering limited swim lessons. For more information, and to register your child, email us today!

Registered parents will be able to check their child in at the front lobby, where a YMCA staff member will greet them. Children must complete a health screening including a temperature check prior to entry. Please present the green screen on your mobile at the Welcome Desk. Current Provincial Requirements mean that we must limit hourly attendance at the YMCA. Therefore, our viewing gallery is unavailable at this time. For safety and for your convenience, we are applying a Day Camp model to provide continuous supervision for children who attend swimming lessons.

Families, get ready to try some Zumba and Yoga starting November 16!

We will also be offering Family Swim in the Leisure Pool. This will be for YMCA members only, who pre-register through the mywellness app.  Provincial Requirements recommend that all people in the family be members from the same household. We can accommodate 5 people per hour. Swim Admission Standards will be in effect.

With these additions, we will be opening the general change rooms with limited capacity, and physical distancing measures will be enforced. Masks are required inside the changerooms at all times. You will need to wear your bathing suits in the showers with flip flops/sandals. We will be providing limited locker usage for everyone. We will continue to actively monitor the situation and align with the recommendations of Provincial Requirements to ensure the safety and well-being of both our staff and members at the YMCA of Oakville.

New Safety Procedures

The safety of our members, staff, and community is our number one priority. We have put the following measures in place to help you feel safe upon your return to the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA:

  • Masks worn by all members and staff (may be removed when one is settled into their workout station)
  • Glass barriers at Membership Desks
  • Wellness check prior to entry
  • Contactless scan-in stations
  • Single one-way directional entry and exit
  • No change rooms open at this time (exception of the family change room for swimmers only)
  • Physical distancing measures to maintain 3 metres between other people
  • Increased sanitization and disinfection
  • Increased hand-sanitizing stations
  • Limited building access and capped fitness class sizes to support physical distancing
  • Book-by-time reservation structure to track and monitor number of guests at all time
  • No Day Passes, Guest Passes or Swim Passes at this time to ensure access for our members
  • Installation of the new state-of-the-art heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system

Masks and Wellness Check

All members are required to wear a mask within the facility, but they may be removed when working out. Members and staff must also complete a wellness check prior to entering the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA. This check may be completed up to two hours prior to arrival.

Doing a health screening is as simple as going online to the Wellness Check page, and quickly answering four (4) questions. Once you have completed the screening, you will:

  • either see a green screen signifying you are clear to enter the facility
  • or a red screen letting you know you will need to wait a bit longer before visiting us (we’re sorry, but its for the safety and benefit of us all)

Once you have received a green screen, you may proceed to show the staff located at the front desk, where they will then take a quick temperature check. Provided your temperature does not suggest a fever, you may scan your membership card and enter the facility.

Please note:

  • These wellness checks must be done within a two-hour window before entering the facility
  • Please arrive a maximum of 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment

mywellness App

To help manage and maintain numbers within the building—and to ensure there’s a spot ready just for you—members must book their workout in advance using the mywellness app, or by calling (905)-845-3417.

Follow these steps if you are unfamiliar with the mywellness app:

  1. Download the mywellness app from your preferred app store (Apple | Google Play)
  2. Create an account, and select Oakville as your location and Peter Gilgan Family YMCA as your facility
  3. Select the date you would like to attend to see what classes are available
  4. For more information, click on the photo of the class you are interested in attending
  5. Select ‘Book’ to reserve your spot
  6. For fitness classes and lane swims, select your preferred space, bike, yoga mat, or lane location
  7. You will then receive an email from Peter Gilgan Family YMCA confirming your registration

  • Registration opens seven days/one week in advance of the scheduled workout and/or fitness class

Automatic Membership Reactivation

Student Memberships are active as of September 22. All adult memberships were automatically reactivated on September 8, and billing has resumed. Child and youth memberships will remain on hold during our stage one reopening.
