Nature and Scope

The March Break Day Camp Director will report through the Supervisor, Camp & Youth Engagement and is responsible for ensuring a fun, safe and positive experience for all camp participants. The Director provides direct supervision (with the support of the Supervisor) to a team of camp staff, ensuring ongoing coaching and support to achieve camp goals. The Director ensures the successful day to day operations of camp and adheres to all YMCA of Oakville best practices, policies and procedures.

Salary and Work Schedule

  • March Break (March 11 ā€“ 15, 2019); 8:30 am ā€“ 4:30 pm

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a positive role model for children, youth, co-workers and families
  • Provides direct supervision, coaching and support to staff and volunteers on a daily basis
  • Assists with the orientation and training of camp counsellors, volunteers and placement students
  • Provides staff with constructive feedback on a daily basis
  • Fosters an environment where camp counsellors can maximize their talents and recognizes good performance
  • Works effectively as part of the camp team and within the YMCA to assist in the achievement of group and organizational goals
  • Supports camp counsellors by providing high quality programs for children and youth
  • Ensures that all camp staff adhere to program specific principles
  • Ensures all camp staff have access to program resources and provides ongoing support and ideas for program improvement
  • Ensures effective communication with families through pre-camp phone call and newsletter
  • Ensures family inquiries and concerns are followed up on in a timely and courteous manner
  • Seeks support where needed to effectively handle difficult situations
  • Ensures accurate attendance of campers and ensures appropriate follow up as necessary
  • Ensures compliance with YMCA of Oakville Child Protection policies and procedures at all times

Knowledge, Skill, Ability and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years experience working within a day camp or overnight camp program
  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Experience planning and leading programs for children and youth
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR ā€˜Cā€™ prior to the first day of camp
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective conflict resolution skills
  • Strong team work and leadership skills
  • Post-secondary education in a related field is an asset
  • Must have a current and valid police records check with vulnerable sector screening
