On YMCA Healthy Kids Day (Sunday June 3, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm), join us in reaching our goal of 1,000,000 steps as a Healthy Kids Day community! Registration opens at 10:45 am, pick up your YMCA pedometer & passport, and explore the wide range of activities we have to offer that will promote a healthy, active lifestyle for your entire family.

According to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth, a healthy 24 hours includes moderate to vigorous physical activity (sweat), light physical activity (step), uninterrupted rest (sleep) and sedentary behaviour (sit).

Sweat

Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity

An accumulation of at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity involving a variety of aerobic activities. Vigorous physical activities and muscle and bone strengthening activities should each be incorporated at least 3 days a week.

Step

Light Physical Activity

Several hours of a variety of structured and unstructured light physical activities.

Sleep

Uninterrupted 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night for those aged 5-13 yrs & 8 to 10 hours per night for those aged 14-17 yrs, with consistent bedtimes and wake-up times.

Sit

Sedentary Behaviour

No more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time and limited sitting for extended periods.

Our challenge to the community on YMCA Healthy Kids Day is to participate as a family in activities that promote each of the above healthy components. Get your “sweat” on with Family Box Fit, “step” in to the Y for Family Track Time, “sleep” easy at night after an afternoon of Family Yoga and “sit” down and spend quality family time learning a new skill like Robotics!

At the end of the event, record your number of steps and submit your passport for a chance to win prizes and help us reach 1,000,000 steps!
